Richmond launches community energy scheme — events start 23 July

Richmond Council is inviting residents to help shape a new community energy initiative, with a series of introductory events beginning on 23 July — timed to coincide with Community Energy Fortnight, which runs from 1 to 14 July nationally.

The initiative, run in partnership with Community Energy London, is designed to explore how a local cooperative could work in practice. The model typically involves residents collectively owning renewable energy projects such as solar panels on schools or community buildings, or shared heating systems. The potential benefits include lower energy costs for local institutions and any surplus income staying within the borough.

For Barnes residents, the appeal of community energy often comes from several directions at once: a practical step on climate action, a chance to develop new skills, or simply a way to get involved with like-minded neighbours. No prior expertise is required to attend the events.
